Are the CL4FIRE Systems ULC Approved?

Yes – CL4FIRE systems have all been tested to ULC standards at Standards Council of Canada accredited fire testing facilities. CL4FIRE has recently taken certification to a new level much higher than any other fire protection ductwrap product in Canada. CL4FIRE products have undergone an expensive 2-year evaluation and testing program overseen by the Government of Canada sponsored engineering and review team at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) to ensure compliance with all Canadian Building Codes. No other product can presently match the building code acceptance that CL4FIRE offers.

Can I paint or metal clad around the CL4FIRE Product?

Yes – Grease duct systems are rated for 0” clearance and so can contact other materials on the outside surface and the fire rating on external fire rated systems remains intact as the insulation rating will remain unaffected. Once painted or clad, the installer may consider adding warning labels to advise that the system is fire rated.

How can I be sure the product has been properly installed?

CL4 Inc. and the fire testing laboratories seek to provide listing clarity regarding the proper installation of the CL4FIRE systems. However, CL4 offers site inspections or review of installation photographs when requested to assist with proper installation of the CL4FIRE fire rated systems.

What if my duct is too close to the wall or ceiling to wrap the product completely around the ductwork?

CL4FIRE is approved for 2 or 3-sided installations at concrete floor or wall locations. If the fire rated partition uses combustible or limited combustible materials then the ductwork normally requires relocation. If relocation is not possible, then the installer should contact CL4 Inc. for a site specific review of the installation.

Do I have to wrap the product around the duct entirely through the floor or ceiling firestop opening?

For Grease Ductwork - CL4FIRE need not be wrapped entirely through a concrete opening and can snugly install against the firestop. However, the CL4FIRE product must be wrapped through the opening if the penetration travels through combustible or limited combustible materials.

For Ventilation Ductwork - Ductwork can be either wrapped entirely through the opening before firestopping or alternatively the duct can be firestopped prior to wrapping the duct with the CL4FIRE wrap snugly abutting both sides of the firestop.

What do I need to do if we encounter interference from a pipe or other building service material that is too close to the ductwork to allow complete wrapping of the duct?

It is always preferred that proper clearance be maintained around the ductwork to match the listed installation whenever possible. When this is not possible then it may be deemed appropriate to also wrap the interfering material with CL4FIRE insulation to the same thickness as the duct or pipe for a length of 18”. Always review the installation with the building official prior to deviation from the CL4FIRE listed system.

Can I use CL4FIRE to address a previously installed grease duct gypsum chase assembly?

Yes – The CL4FIRE listing allows for addressing a gypsum chase by inserting the CL4FIRE material a minimum of 4” into the gypsum chase filling the opening and sealing with CL4FIRE listed firestop materials. The CL4FIRE system must snugly abut the firestop at the transition location.

Can I use CL4FIRE to protect a duct that has been previously treated with an alternate insulation fire wrap system?

Yes – We recommend the CL4FIRE be overlapped 3” over the existing material and then continue the installation using CL4FIRE listing approved methods. You may wish to consult your building official prior to installation.

Can the hanging rod supports and duct cradles be enclosed within the wrapped system?

Yes – The CL4FIRE system is approved with unwrapped hanging rods and duct supports external to the CL4FIRE wrapped ductwork or cocooned within the wrap assembly. To cocoon wrap the assembly, simply slit the insulation to go around the hanging rods and install a CL4FIRE listed sealant to reseal the slit material as you continue to install CL4FIRE around the ductwork. What if the duct size exceeds the maximum size allowance in the listed system?

CL4FIRE is pleased to have tested among the largest ductwork systems in North America. While we strive to test the largest systems available, there are often testing furnace size limitations that restrict us from testing even larger ductwork. CL4 Inc. is pleased to review any size related inquiries and make recommendations for very large duct applications.

Where is CL4FIRE manufactured and tested?

The CL4FIRE product is assembled and typically tested within Canada. Some testing was conducted directly at the NRC fire testing facility in Ottawa.

Can CL4FIRE be installed for Emergency Generator Exhaust Applications?

Yes – When installing around emergency generator exhausts we recommend that the product be installed using 2-layers of CL4FIRE Red with staggered seams snugly butted on both layers but without foil jacketing on both layers to eliminate any odour that may occur when the foil is exposed to high temperatures. The product can be offered with a foil scrim laminated on the external side of the outside layer when requested.
